1945, in the undressing room next to the gas chambers at Auschwitz, a shot was fired and an SS officer was killed. It was said that the shooting was carried out by Francesca Mann, a ballet dancer from Warsaw. This act of heroism did not receive much attention, perhaps due to rumors that Francesca had collaborated with the Nazis. Francesca left behind nothing except a few photographs, some newspaper articles about her pre-war performances, and an abundance of varied and contradictory testimonies about her behavior during the war. The creators of the film wove together the historical stories and built the myth: Francesca.
